Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954) created Longwood Gardens after purchasing land in 1906 to save an arboretm of historic trees. He went on to build the magnificent gardens, Conservatory and fountains that we saw and loved. We were there during the fall mum showing! The lily pads that are at the top can get as big as 8' across, and they looked like giant baking pans to me!
